<text>The Fennica volume consists of two parts. The first part is devoted to the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic published by Elias Lönnrot in 1835. Castrén was the first scholar to translate the entire epic into any language other than Finnish, in this case into Swedish. He also started his career as an academic teacher; giving lectures on the Kalevala in 1841. Now the translation will be published side by side with the original text of Elias Lönnrot’s Kalevala to facilitate comparison. In the marginal notes added by the editor, Castrén’s translation is compared with some minor parts of the Kalevala published in Swedish by other authors before the appearance of Castrén’s full translation. In addition, there are several manuscripts for word lists and comments Castrén made to support his teaching and translation work.

The second part of the volume contains Castrén’s manuscripts for a Finnish grammar book as well as his prepared materials for his 1844 lectures on Finnish grammar. After the publication of the Kalevala in 1835, the status of Finnish rose rapidly in university circles, and the rise of National Romanticism made Finnish into an interesting object of study. Castrén’s lectures on Finnish grammar in 1844 were a great event and the true highlight of the academic year. Now the texts have been edited on the basis of the original manuscripts. They have not been published before. Both parts of the volume have been supplemented with an editorial introduction to contextualize Castrén’s scientific work and thinking.
<text>
The Mari or Cheremis grammar is one of the few materials Castrén was able to publish himself. He began work on it in Helsinki in late 1844. Castrén’s primary sources were two grammars published in Russia in 1775 and 1837, and some religious texts. At that time, the majority of the existing Mari texts were written in Hill Mari, i.e. in the Western dialect of Mari, whose speakers constitute a small minority of the Mari people. Castrén discovered that there was a Mari soldier serving in the Russian troops in Helsinki. The Mari in question, whose identity is unknown, did not know Russian or any other languages, so working with him was difficult. Castrén concentrated on the study of Mari for some weeks. He was soon to set off on a second expedition, which would take him to Siberia. The itinerary included passing through Kazanˊ. Since Mari settlements were located in the Kazanˊ area, Castrén planned on improving the grammar manuscript there.

Castrén arrived in Kazanˊ on 10th April 1845. It was, however, difficult to find Maris in Kazanˊ, because they mainly lived in the countryside. At last, a young native Mari working as a clerk was found. He proved to be witty and brisk, so the work started going fast. There is no definite information about the name of this informant either, but, in the manuscript, there is a note “Cheremis from the Governorate of Kazanˊ, Kusma Jemjänskij, Bolšoj Junjskoj (Болше-Юнь[ин]ский) Uezd”. This is assumed to have been the language informant.

Castrén sent the ready grammar manuscript to Finland in early May and continued his journey to Siberia. The Elementa grammatices Tscheremissæ grammar, dated 1st May 1845, Kazanˊ, appeared in the autumn of 1845 in Helsinki. The book consists of a sketchy grammar and a wordlist of approx. 700 words. This critical edition of Elementa grammatices Tscheremissæ is a translation from the Latin into English with editor’s comments.

                <text>
The Komi grammar is one of the few materials Castrén was able to publish himself. He collected the material during his third expedition in 1843 – he spent a period of five months near the Arctic Circle in what is today known as the Komi Republic, but which at that time belonged to the Governorate of Arxangelʹsk. The actual content of the grammar took shape in Ižma and nearby villages, and the Latin manuscript was completed in Kolva. Elementa grammatices Syrjaenae is, despite its name, not a grammar of the entire Zyrian language but one singular dialect, the Ižma dialect. This was the first of the published grammars by Castrén. The book consists of a grammar and a vocabulary of about 1,100 words with a sample dialect text: four chapters of the Gospel of St. Matthew, translated into the Ižma dialect.

In only five weeks after returning to Helsinki in May 1844, Castrén defended his licentiate (doctor’s) dissertation at the Imperial Alexander University in Helsinki and was awarded his doctorate in philosophy. The 22-page dissertation De nominum declinatione in lingua Syrjaena is included with minimal editing in the grammar published in the autumn of 1844 (III Nominals, A. Nouns, § 24–31).

Syrjaenica is a critical edition of Elementa grammatices Syrjaenae and seven wedding laments collected by Castrén, translated into English with editors’ comments.

                <text>The Khanty grammar is one of the few materials Castrén was able to publish himself. He collected the material over the course of a few weeks in the summer of 1845 in the Irtyš and Surgut areas, where the southern and eastern dialects of Khanty were spoken.

During these weeks, he outlined the Khanty grammar in Swedish and his companion Johan Reinhold Bergstadi translated it into German. After Castrén returned from his journey in 1849, he was able to check the German translation and oversee the printing of the book. In this critical edition, most of the commentary is made based on the printed book, which is here translated into English. There are only minor comments on the differences between the printed version and the manuscript, as Castrén seemingly had control over the printing process, and thus the printed version can be regarded as his own synthesis of the grammatical and lexical notes. The commentaries are made on the basis of best modern knowledge of Khanty. In this volume, a brief modern grammar of Khanty is also presented, focusing on the Irtyš and Surgut dialects.
